ADP Misses — Market Waits on Friday's Payrolls

819471
U.S. private payrolls rose by 38,000 in August according to ADP, below the 47,000 expected, with hiring momentum continuing to cool. The problem is that a softer labor market isn't translating directly into good news. Oil and input costs are still rising and the 10-year Treasury yield remains around 4.8%, leaving the market to weigh weakening employment against inflation pressure that hasn't gone away — which makes the policy path harder to read, not easier. Attention now shifts to Friday's nonfarm payrolls, where roughly 50,000 is expected, with the unemployment rate and wage growth equally important. If both jobs and wages cool together, rate-hike bets and Treasury yields have room to ease and tech stocks get some relief. If wage growth stays sticky, the tightening trade likely continues. ADP's historical correlation with the official payroll number is inconsistent, so any single print says only so much. Do you read this ADP number as good news, or does it need Friday's payrolls to confirm?
