On Monday, Oura revealed a refreshed app interface along with a new “Cumulative Stress” tool. The company also announced its efforts to obtain FDA approval for blood pressure features that can estimate a user’s risk of hypertension.

The updated Oura app now offers greater customization through three primary sections. The “Today” section highlights the most pertinent insights to guide daily choices, while the “Vitals” section gives a quick overview of metrics such as sleep, stress, and heart health patterns. The “My Health” section delivers a broader perspective on the user’s overall wellness, showcasing strengths, trends, and areas for proactive improvement. This section also features “Habits” and “Routines” to illustrate how daily behaviors influence health.

The redesigned app also enhances menstrual tracking, now offering a 12-month overview of period and fertility predictions, a significant expansion from the previous one-month window.

The Cumulative Stress function is designed to help users recognize how their bodies build up and react to ongoing stress. It calculates a stress score using data from the previous month, updating the results every week. This score is based on five elements: sleep consistency, heart’s stress response, minor sleep movements, temperature control, and the effects of physical activity.

“It goes beyond simply counting hours spent under stress,” Jason Russell, Oura’s VP of Consumer Software Product, explained to TechCrunch. “We’re assessing various physiological signals that reflect the impact of cumulative stress on your body. For example, how your heart rate and variability respond after stressful events, your body’s temperature regulation overnight, and the continuity of your sleep. We also look at small movements during sleep, not just major ones—these subtle signs can indicate elevated cumulative stress.”

This new capability will become available to users worldwide in the next few weeks.

As part of its journey toward an FDA-cleared blood pressure tool, Oura is launching a Blood Pressure Profile study to investigate how passive tracking of key signals might help detect early hypertension risks.

The study, which has received Institutional Review Board approval, will be conducted in Oura Labs in the U.S. later this year. Participants will receive updates on their current hypertension risk by combining data from their Oura Ring with a brief questionnaire about family history, medications, and lifestyle. They’ll be informed if they show no, moderate, or significant signs of hypertension.

Those with pronounced indicators will be advised to consult healthcare professionals. Oura notes that the algorithm will monitor changes over time and prompt users for regular check-ins throughout the study.

This announcement follows Oura’s recent $900 million funding round led by Fidelity Management & Research Co., with additional investment from ICONIQ, Whale Rock, and Atreides.

This news also comes as Oura recently introduced its Oura Ring 4 Ceramic series, debuted its first charging case, and added a Health Panels feature that allows users to schedule blood tests directly within the app.
