There's a class of capital that starts at hundreds of thousands to over a million dollars per order: whales, institutions, and teams running quant and arbitrage strategies. What they fear most isn't the fee — it's one thing: walking through the book.

What "walking through the book" means

Every price level in the order book holds only so much size. When your order is big enough that the best price, the 5bps ring, and the 10bps ring can't absorb it, it keeps eating outward into the 50bps layer (mid ±0.5%) — and sometimes clears that out too.

The result: your own order pushes the price to a badly unfavorable level. You haven't even finished buying, and you've already bid the price up on yourself. That's walking through the book — also called market impact. For large capital, this is the real cost center, far more painful than fees.

So for this trader, watching 5bps or 10bps isn't nearly enough — whether you can avoid blowing through the book comes down to how deep that outermost 50bps layer is.

Start with the data: how big is the 50bps gap?

Take Bitget as an example. Here's the actual 50bps order-book depth (resting orders within mid ±0.5%) on this week's hottest semiconductor perps, vs. the next-best venue:

The thicker this layer, the more room your large order has to be absorbed cleanly — instead of sending the price flying.

Same large order, two very different outcomes

Say you're filling $1,000,000 of NVDA perps at a mid-price of $180.

Scenario A — on Bitget (50bps depth ~$2.74M): the book is thick enough that your $1M is only a fraction of the 50bps depth, so the price barely moves, with average slippage of about 15 bps. Cost = $1,000,000 × 15 ÷ 10,000 = $1,500.

Scenario B — on a thin book with roughly half the depth (~$1.87M or less): that same $1M is a large share of the book, walking through multiple levels and dragging the average fill to about $180.99 — roughly 55 bps of slippage. Cost = $1,000,000 × 55 ÷ 10,000 = $5,500.

Same order, a $4,000 difference.

Now stretch it over a month

Assume about 10 full round-trips a month (20 large executions):

$110,000

$30,000

$80,000

Same strategy, same volume — and purely because of the difference in 50bps depth, that's $80,000 more a month. At this size it's no longer a cost question; it's a question of whether the strategy can run at all.

The real danger of a thin 50bps isn't the cost — it's getting boxed in

For whales and strategy capital, a shallow 50bps tier has consequences well beyond paying more:

  • One order blows through the book → you push your own fill price against yourself;

  • Trying to build quietly, but a thin book exposes your large order → easy to get front-run or picked off;

  • Needing to exit in a hurry, but the book can't absorb it → you can't unwind cleanly, and the risk stays on your book.

A genuinely deep 50bps means you can get in and out in size without moving the market — the execution lifeline for any strategy operating at scale.

One line for large and strategy capital

If your typical order is hundreds of thousands to over a million dollars, stop judging a venue by its fee rate and best price alone. Look at whether its 50bps depth on your names can actually carry your order — that's what decides whether you blow through the book on entry and hand your profit to market impact. And at that tier, Bitget is still the deepest of the pack on the hot names.

Now you understand it, it is time to trade it!
