According to several reports, General Motors is cutting thousands of jobs at various electric vehicle and battery facilities throughout the United States.

Approximately 1,200 workers at GM’s electric vehicle plant in Detroit, Michigan, are being put on “indefinite layoff.” Additional layoffs, both permanent and temporary, are happening at the company’s Ultium Cells battery plants in Ohio and Tennessee. The Wall Street Journal reports that GM will halt operations at these battery sites starting January 5, with intentions to restart production around mid-2026.

These layoffs follow closely after GM revealed job cuts among some salaried employees and disclosed a $1.6 billion charge as it revises its electric vehicle strategy.

GM has also recently discontinued its BrightDrop electric commercial van initiative. The automaker, along with several competitors, is scaling back its EV efforts in the U.S. following the end of the federal tax incentive and the easing of regulations on gasoline-powered vehicles.
