Nordic Consumers Respond to U.S. Actions with App-Driven Boycott

In response to former President Trump's remarks about acquiring Greenland, which is governed by Denmark, European shoppers are taking a stand against American products. Two mobile applications that help users identify goods made in the United States and recommend regional alternatives have recently soared in popularity, reaching the top of the Danish App Store.

Both Denmark and Greenland share access to the Danish App Store and Google Play, making these apps widely available across the region.

This surge in downloads coincides with a grassroots movement in Denmark, where consumers are actively boycotting American goods. Many have also chosen to cancel trips to the U.S. and end subscriptions to American streaming platforms such as Netflix.

According to recent figures from Appfigures, two apps—NonUSA and Made O’Meter—have both climbed into the top 10 on iOS and Android this month.

Spotlight on NonUSA

NonUSA, which is designed to help users avoid American-made products, became the most downloaded app on Wednesday, after leaping from sixth place the previous day and from 441st earlier in January. The app allows users to scan barcodes to check a product’s country of origin and suggests Danish alternatives for purchase.

Currently, NonUSA’s primary user base spans Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and Iceland, highlighting a broader Nordic effort to support the boycott.

Made O’Meter’s Growing Presence

Made O’Meter, available for both iOS and Android, has also gained traction and now ranks fifth in the App Store, though its reach is somewhat smaller than NonUSA’s.

Combined, downloads for NonUSA (iOS) and Made O’Meter (iOS and Google Play) have surged by 867%—nearly tenfold—over the past week compared to the previous seven days.

App Store Trends in Denmark

It’s important to note that Denmark’s App Store sees far fewer downloads than major markets like the U.S. In Denmark, just a few thousand downloads in a single day can propel an app to the top of the charts. Appfigures reports that the Danish iOS App Store averages about 200,000 downloads per day across all apps.

Other popular apps in Denmark’s top 10 include the travel app Rejsekort, which may be useful for those altering travel plans, as well as various local services. U.S.-based apps such as Shop, ChatGPT, and Microsoft Authenticator also remain among the top-ranked downloads.
