McDonald's Considers Expanding High-Protein Menu for GLP-1 Users

McDonald's is exploring ways to introduce more protein-rich, GLP-1-friendly options to its menu, according to CEO Chris Kempczinski. This move aligns with the growing popularity of high-protein diets and the increasing use of GLP-1 medications among consumers.

During a recent earnings call on February 11, where McDonald's reported significant growth for the final quarter of 2025, Kempczinski discussed the rising prevalence of GLP-1 receptor usage among customers. When asked about changing eating habits due to the wider availability of GLP-1 medications such as Ozempic and Wegovy, he stated, "We are closely monitoring these trends and dedicating considerable attention to them."

Kempczinski noted, "So far, we haven't observed a significant impact from weight loss drugs on our business. Fortunately, protein remains a key interest for GLP-1 users, and our menu already features a strong selection of protein-based items."

He also acknowledged the rapid adoption of these medications and anticipated shifts in customer behavior, such as lower calorie consumption, fewer snacks, and dietary adjustments. "We're experimenting and testing new ideas, and as we gather more insights and customer feedback, these could eventually be reflected in our menu," he added.

However, Kempczinski did not provide specific details about what a menu tailored for GLP-1 users might include.

Protein Takes Center Stage at McDonald's

Jill McDonald, Executive Vice President and Chief Restaurant Experience Officer, emphasized that McDonald's already offers a variety of protein-forward choices, such as fish, chicken strips, snack wraps, and sausage biscuits. "Many of our menu items are popular with GLP-1 users," she said. "We have a tradition of staying attuned to our customers and evolving our menu as needed."

McDonald's Snack Wraps are set to return to participating locations nationwide starting Thursday, July 10.

Jill McDonald added that the company will keep learning and adapting to customer preferences. "We already have some long-term ideas in development, guided by what our customers want," she concluded.

GLP-1 Medication Usage on the Rise

According to an October 28 survey from the Gallup National Health and Well-Being Index, the percentage of men and women using GLP-1 drugs more than doubled from February 2024 to October 2025, increasing from 5.8% to 12.4%.

GLP-1 medications, approved by the FDA for weight loss in 2021, have surged in popularity as an effective way to lose weight and increase satiety, helping people eat less. Reports indicate that those taking GLP-1 medications are encouraged to maintain adequate protein intake, as rapid weight loss can also lead to muscle loss.

The Protein Trend Across the Food Industry

From Target's wellness initiatives to Starbucks and Dunkin' introducing protein beverages, a growing number of companies are spotlighting protein-centric foods and drinks. Subway has launched Protein Pockets, and Chipotle has unveiled a High Protein Menu featuring a generous portion of meat.

On January 7, Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced new dietary guidelines for the U.S., recommending increased protein consumption and reduced intake of sugar and ultra-processed foods. Kennedy emphasized, "My advice as Secretary of Health and Human Services is simple: Choose real, whole foods."
