Jinse Finance reported that cryptocurrency CFOs are calling on the international banking regulator, the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision (BCBS), to revise the 1250% risk weight assigned to bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies under the Basel III framework. Private equity is the second highest risk-weighted sector, with a weight of 400% under the current Basel III banking system. Chris Perkins, President of investment firm CoinFund, stated that the capital rules under Basel III discourage banks from holding bitcoin and cryptocurrencies because the collateral cost of holding digital assets is relatively high, which reduces banks' return on equity—a key indicator of bank profitability.
