Delta Air Lines Sets Sights on Expanding Fleet: Is There Further Potential?
Delta Air Lines Expands Widebody Fleet to Meet Rising Demand
Delta Air Lines is ramping up its fleet expansion efforts in response to the ongoing recovery in air travel. Earlier this year, the Atlanta-based carrier revealed plans to add 31 new Airbus widebody jets—16 A330-900s and 15 A350-900s—to its lineup, with deliveries set to start in 2029.
Modernizing for Global Growth
This latest order is part of Delta’s strategy to strengthen its international network and replace aging aircraft with more advanced models. The agreement covers a new aircraft purchase, the exercise of 10 previously held options, and 20 additional options for future acquisitions. CEO Ed Bastian expressed optimism about the move, noting that as Delta expands its global reach and long-haul operations, these new jets will enhance both operational efficiency and the premium travel experience.
Delta is actively updating its fleet to support anticipated growth in international travel and increased demand for premium seating over the next decade. The incoming widebody aircraft are expected to provide more premium seats on medium- and long-haul international routes, while also delivering improved fuel efficiency and profitability.
Fleet Expansion Details
With these additions, Delta’s A330-900 fleet will reach 55 aircraft, and its A350 family will grow to 79, including 20 A350-1000s, with deliveries beginning in early 2027. The advanced range and capabilities of the A350 will enable Delta to launch new long-haul routes to key destinations in Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and the South Pacific. The airline has already started or announced flights to cities such as Taipei, Melbourne, Hong Kong, and Riyadh using the A350 platform.
New Boeing Order and Engine Partnership
In a separate agreement, Delta has committed to purchasing 30 Boeing 787-10 widebody jets, with options for 30 more. Deliveries for these aircraft are scheduled to begin in 2031. These new planes will not only improve fuel efficiency but also support Delta’s long-haul expansion and international growth strategy, leveraging the airline’s strong domestic network and global partnerships.
Delta has chosen GE Aerospace’s GEnx engines to power the new Boeing 787-10s, with the deal also covering spare engines and long-term service support. This agreement further deepens Delta’s longstanding relationship with GE Aerospace, as the airline already operates a significant number of aircraft powered by GE and CFM engines (a joint venture between GE Aerospace and Safran Aircraft Engines).
