Week Preview: Ongoing Conflicts and Escalations
The Far-Reaching Effects of the Middle East Conflict
The ongoing conflict in the Middle East is reshaping the global landscape in profound ways. President Trump's insistence on an unconditional surrender has made it increasingly challenging to find a quick resolution to the crisis.
This turmoil is sending shockwaves throughout the world economy. The production and distribution of food are heavily reliant on oil and gas, factoring in the costs of transportation, fertilizers, and pesticides.
Additionally, remittances from migrant workers play a crucial role in supporting many developing countries. In the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) nations—comprising Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman, and Bahrain—migrant labor makes up more than 70% of the workforce. This region stands as one of the largest sources of remittances globally, with an estimated $135 billion expected in 2024. Many of these workers hail from India and other countries.
