Canadian GDP — The Resurgence of Traditional Industries
Canadian Economy Shows Unexpected Strength Early in 2026
In a welcome turn of events, Canada's real GDP outperformed forecasts during the first two months of 2026. This resilience came despite a harsh winter and disappointing figures in both manufacturing and employment at the start of the year. January saw GDP inch up by 0.1% month-over-month, surpassing the initial flat estimate, while preliminary data for February indicates a solid 0.2% increase. Although these positive results occurred before the escalation of conflict in Iran and the resulting surge in fuel prices, they reveal that the Canadian economy was on a firmer footing than many had expected prior to the recent upheaval.
