As of June 2026, the largest single known holding in Bitcoin remains in wallets tied to Satoshi Nakamoto, the pseudonymous creator of BTC. Data from the Arkham Intel Platform indicates addresses linked to Nakamoto collectively contain approximately 1.096 million BTC.

The largest Bitcoin balance ever recorded

This sum is valued at about $72 billion based on current prices. The holdings are believed to have been accumulated through mining activities in Bitcoin’s early years, sourced from around 22,000 blocks. According to the same data, these holdings represent roughly 5.5% of the total Bitcoin supply in circulation.

Glossary: The Patoshi Pattern is a forensic analysis method that examines technical traces in blocks mined during Bitcoin’s early days in order to associate certain mining activity with a single source. The findings mentioned in this article use this model to classify wallets linked to Satoshi Nakamoto.

Arkham’s research bases its estimates on the so-called Patoshi Pattern—a mining footprint thought to be closely associated with Nakamoto. The company notes this pattern aligns with known addresses that have previously conducted BTC transactions linked to the creator. Most of these wallets, however, have shown almost no movement since Bitcoin’s inception.

According to Arkham Intel Platform, Satoshi Nakamoto-controlled addresses hold about 1.096 million BTC, making this the largest identifiable individual Bitcoin balance as of June 2026.

Coinbase and Strategy dominate the institutional landscape

On the institutional side, Coinbase stands out with a total of 970,000 BTC—one of the largest exchange and custodial crypto holdings worldwide. This figure comprises both client custody balances and assets held from Coinbase’s own revenue streams. Coinbase is recognized as a major US-based cryptocurrency exchange and custody services provider.

Among publicly traded companies, Strategy—formerly known as MicroStrategy—leads with a total stash of 847,000 BTC. This accumulation has resulted from consistent purchases since August 2020. Of the company’s holdings, about 184,000 BTC are kept in accounts at Fidelity Custody instead of on-chain wallets.

BlackRock emerges as the leading ETF issuer with 764,000 BTC, while Binance holds 670,000 BTC. Fidelity Custody manages 446,000 BTC on behalf of various clients, including Strategy.

Coinbase 970,000 BTC Exchange & Custody
Strategy 847,000 BTC Public Company
BlackRock 764,000 BTC ETF Issuer
Binance 670,000 BTC Exchange

Governments and unidentified wallets also rank high

On the government front, the United States tops the list with 328,000 BTC in its possession, most of which was seized during legal proceedings. Sources for these assets include recoveries from the Bitfinex hack, confiscations related to the Silk Road case, and seizures from the LuBian incident.

The bulk of the US government’s 328,000 BTC was gathered through criminal investigations and asset seizures.

The UK government follows with 61,000 BTC. Some large wallets with unidentified owners are also drawing global attention—one contains 92,000 BTC and another 78,000 BTC—though Arkham has not definitively verified these ownerships.

Among private companies, Tether stands out with 97,000 BTC that can be verified on the blockchain. Block.one is linked to a reported 164,000 BTC, though this amount has not been confirmed on-chain. The data underscores the varied distribution of Bitcoin ownership, spanning individuals, companies, funds, and governments.
