Tesla Q2 profit decline, pressured by performance and business transformation, raises market concerns

Impacted by several factors such as the slowdown in global electric vehicle market demand, intensifying price wars, and the commercialization process of new businesses yet to be proven, Tesla's recently released financial report shows that both its Q2 revenue and net profit missed market expectations. As profitability in its core automotive business comes under pressure, the market’s risk assessment and outlook regarding Tesla’s strategic shift towards fields like autonomous Robotaxi services and humanoid robots (Optimus), as well as artificial intelligence, have become divided.

According to the financial report, Tesla’s operating income and net profit dropped year-on-year in Q2, and its gross margin narrowed further, reflecting lasting profit compression from major market price wars and discount promotion strategies. At the same time, as the growth rate for electric vehicle deliveries slows, the support from Tesla’s traditional main business to the company's overall performance has weakened.

Faced with profit pressure in the core automotive sector, Tesla CEO Elon Musk reaffirmed the company’s determination to transition towards autonomous driving and artificial intelligence during the earnings call. Musk emphasized that the company is making every effort to advance the R&D and testing of Robotaxi technology and plans to further expand the scale of related pilot operations within the year. In addition, Musk stated that significant progress has been made in the development of the Optimus humanoid robot, which is expected to become a key business segment driving the company’s long-term growth in the future.

However, capital markets and industry analysts remain cautious about the implementation pace and short-term profitability of these new businesses. Analysts point out that the commercial rollout of autonomous Robotaxis still faces stringent regulatory approval and technological reliability verification, and that the humanoid robot business faces a long timeline from technological R&D to mass production and monetization.

Market analysts note that with slowing growth in the core electric vehicle business, Tesla’s high R&D investment and the uncertainties of its new initiatives are contributing to increased short-term valuation pressure. Whether the company can consolidate its core automotive market share while successfully achieving a leap to artificial intelligence and intelligent manufacturing still awaits further validation by the market and time.
