Vitalik: Diamond iO Explores "Stealth" New Paradigm, Potentially Advancing Privacy Computing to a New Stage
BlockBeats News, July 28th - Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has released a new article introducing the novel cryptographic obfuscation technology Diamond iO. This technology aims to address the issue of the extremely low efficiency of traditional indistinguishability obfuscation schemes, allowing programs to run while hiding internal logic and sensitive data. While traditional iO technology possesses powerful privacy protection capabilities, its operational costs are so high that they are almost impractical. Diamond iO, however, by adopting a more aggressive novel cryptographic assumption, has improved computational efficiency from "cosmic-scale time" to "planetary-scale time," bringing it closer to practical applications.
Diamond iO is built on technologies such as Attribute-Based Encryption (ABE) and Fully Homomorphic Encryption (FHE). By encrypting the program, users can execute the encrypted program and obtain the correct output without being able to view its internal code or hidden keys. This solution introduces a new input encoding mechanism and conditional decryption method to both ensure program logic concealment and reduce computational complexity. Its core use cases include protecting programs containing private keys, achieving secure software licensing, building trustless cryptographic services, and supporting blockchain and artificial intelligence systems with stronger privacy protection.
However, Diamond iO is currently still in the early stages of research. Its security relies on new cryptographic assumptions including All-Product LWE and Evasive LWE, requiring further research validation. Additionally, the technology still faces challenges such as high computational costs and circuit depth limitations. Researchers believe that through optimizing underlying hash functions, improving homomorphic encryption schemes, and reducing security parameter requirements, Diamond iO is poised to become a significant driver of the development of practical program obfuscation technology in the future.
