"Couldn’t Be Better"! SK Hynix Profits Surge Sixfold, But Institutions Warn: This May Be the Peak

SK Hynix delivered a record-breaking earnings report, but the market's reaction was far from pure enthusiasm. While analysts acknowledged the company's fundamental value, they also pointed out a core issue: this could be the peak of its performance.

Regarding SK Hynix's historic profit achievement, Riedel Research analyst David Riedel offered a rare and candid judgement—"I think it's really as good as it gets." He stated, “A sixfold surge in profitability is certainly impressive, but the recent partial pullback in the share price is nothing more than a normal correction of the overheated AI market bubble.” Meanwhile, he emphasized that the long-term logic for SK Hynix remains intact and believes the stock still has substantial upside potential.

From a market perspective, chip stocks have recently come under pressure from several fronts: lending cycles among AI companies have raised concerns among U.S. investors, compounded by the impact of competitive chip products. David Riedel believes that these factors combined have led to a temporary retreat in share prices, and SK Hynix’s 120% surge over just a few months already built up excessive emotional premiums.

After record-breaking earnings, how should growth prospects be priced?

SK Hynix showcased robust profitability this quarter, but David Riedel directly characterized this as a cyclical high. "Sixfold profit growth—I think this is the peak," he said:

"Previously, the market priced in too much AI hype; this part of the premium rightfully should be squeezed out."

He does not see any substantial deterioration in fundamentals, but instead describes the current adjustment as a return to a reasonable valuation range. "Now we're back to fair valuations and reasonable outlooks—these chip stocks still have a long way to go, just not at breakneck speed as before." In his view, after this self-driven price digestion, future trends will be more sustainable.

Storage business repricing: the underestimated “boring sector”

Amid an AI-dominated market narrative, the value of traditional memory chips was once largely overlooked. David Riedel has now offered a clear reassessment: he believes that the "boring storage business" will prove valuable in the future, and SK Hynix's fundamental story in this field remains intact.

One key factor supporting this judgement is SK Hynix’s long-term supply agreements with customers. David Riedel points out that these structured agreements are designed to defend against memory price volatility, effectively providing resilience for the company's revenue predictability. Thus, even if market sentiment fluctuates in the short term, the long-term supply-demand landscape and pricing power remain solid.

Strategic choices under ample cash flow

Perhaps even more noteworthy than the financial data itself is another signal SK Hynix sent during its earnings release—the company explicitly stated it would "meaningfully expand shareholder returns."

David Riedel believes this statement is quite telling in itself. "They're not even considering ramping up additional capacity," he analyzed, "They’re happy to see the market remain slightly supply-constrained, gladly enjoying this as a major player, while sharing some of the gains with shareholders."

He further points out that with shares soaring and cash on hand, large-scale capacity expansions are not strategically sound at this stage. Whether through buybacks or dividends, returning excess cash to shareholders is the better choice. This strategic message means that management intends to keep market supply relatively tight to protect memory prices and margins, rather than using scale to grab market share.
