  1. Greggs, the UK's largest fast-food chain, achieved countercyclical growth during the summer heatwave, with total sales in the first half of the year rising to £1.1 billion—a year-on-year increase of over 7%. Like-for-like sales grew by around 2%, while 34 new stores brought the total number of outlets to 2,773. The company attributes this to a sustained focus on premium site selection.
  2. The launch of refreshing drinks such as Iced Matcha Latte, lemonade, and smoothies, along with a new high-protein salad range, effectively offset the risk of declining demand for traditional bakery products in hot weather. CEO Roisin Currie noted that the company has adapted to the normalization of heatwaves in the UK, strengthening summer operational resilience by introducing iced beverages last year and upgrading the salad offerings this year.
  3. Cost pressures have eased significantly. The company expects no further price increases this year, with inflation forecasts lowered from 3% to 2%. Greggs has secured 90% of this year’s energy costs and half of next year’s in advance, effectively hedging against oil price hikes. Lower prices for key commodities such as cocoa and coffee have also benefited margins, and pre-tax profit for the first half of the year climbed nearly 20% to £76 million compared to the same period last year.
  4. Ongoing product innovation continues to expand the customer base. The chicken wrap introduced in April has been cited as a standout success, while the antioxidant-rich matcha drinks have attracted Generation Z consumers. A BTG partner pointed out that, amid the rise of weight-loss drugs and economic uncertainty, Greggs still needs to carefully balance pricing with cost control to defend its market share.
