Rare rift emerges within the Federal Reserve; September decisions remain data-dependent, with energy becoming the biggest variable

  1. The Federal Reserve's latest interest rate decision kept rates unchanged as expected, but the vote was 9 to 3, with voting members Kashkari, Logan, and Harker all opposing holding rates steady and favoring a rate hike. This marks the first triple dissent in the same direction since 2016.
  2. After the decision was announced, the US dollar saw a brief decline, mainly reflecting the unwinding of positions that were pricing in a 30% to 40% chance of a rate hike. This was an adjustment of positions rather than a shift in policy stance, and after the selling pressure was quickly released, the market calmed down.
  3. Although the voting breakdown was hawkish, it did not materially change the policy response function for September at this stage. Market pricing implies an approximately 18 basis point rate hike at the next meeting, but before the release of the next two CPI and employment reports, market confidence remains hard to establish.
  4. Energy prices remain a key swing factor influencing the Federal Reserve's decisions. According to institutions, crude oil prices could rise above $100 per barrel by September or fall back to the $70–$75 range, making the path of inflation highly uncertain.
  5. Overall, this meeting appears to be another round of policy delay. The decision-makers will still rely on subsequent data performance to guide the direction of interest rates. Economic indicators over the next two months will determine which way the final policy balance tilts.
