In June, Trump's investment account completed over 1,000 stock trades, with net purchases exceeding $49 million. There were million-dollar level buys in Berkshire Hathaway, Visa, and Mastercard, with financial stocks surpassing tech stocks to become the largest holding sector for the month. The White House insists that the President himself is completely unaware of the trades; all decisions are executed automatically by an independent manager using computer models.

In June, Trump’s investment account completed over a thousand stock transactions, with the financial sector becoming the largest buying focus. The White House insists the president himself is completely unaware of trading decisions.

According to The Wall Street Journal on August 22, based on the latest government disclosure documents, US President Trump’s investment account completed over 1,000 stock transactions in June this year, with more than 550 purchases and over 450 sales.

This document was made public locally on Saturday. The White House immediately stated that the president played no role in the above transactions; all operations are executed by independent managers using computer models to automatically replicate the performance of mainstream stock indexes.

June 18: Large-scale simultaneous buying and selling in one day

The disclosure documents show that June 18 was the most active trading day of the month.

On that day, Trump's account bought over $1 million worth of Berkshire Hathaway, Visa, and Mastercard stocks—three targets that already had previous trading records in the account.

On the same day, the account sold over $1 million of Meta Platforms and Motorola stock.

The timing is noteworthy: On the day before, June 17, Trump signed a temporary peace agreement with Iran in Versailles, France.

Financial stocks replace tech stocks as the main positions in June

Trump’s account had made large bets on tech stocks in the first quarter, but by June the primary buying focus had clearly shifted to financial institutions.

Berkshire Hathaway, Visa, and Mastercard all belong to financial or finance-related sectors, and each buy reached the million-dollar level.

This shift coincides with changes in the market environment—after the signing of the Iran peace agreement, market risk appetite adjusted and there were signs of capital moving toward defensive and value sectors.

White House: President has “no influence” over trading

Facing ongoing concerns about conflicts of interest, White House spokesperson Davis Ingle stated clearly in an email:

Neither President Trump himself nor any family member has the ability to direct, influence, or provide any opinions on the allocation or timing of the investment portfolio. All investment decisions are made solely by independent managers.

Ingle further explained:

The president’s stock and bond portfolio is independently managed by third-party financial institutions. All holdings are placed in fully discretionary accounts and invested through model portfolios based on computer algorithms, automatically replicating recognized indexes, such as the Charles Schwab 1000 Index.

This White House statement is consistent with the strategy previously adopted by the Trump family. Reports indicate that since Trump's return to the White House in early 2025, the Trump family has shifted to automated trading strategies. A Trump Organization spokesperson previously stated that this approach was chosen to alleviate concerns about potential conflicts of interest.

Direct indexing strategy: The logic behind frequent trading

There are technical explanations behind more than a thousand trades.

One of the strategies mentioned by the White House is “direct indexing”—that is, tracking an index’s performance by buying individual stocks while using losing positions to offset capital gains taxes. This type of strategy is characterized by the need to continuously and heavily trade individual stocks.

Simply put, it’s like “manually” holding an index fund, but with more refined tax optimization. Frequent trading is an inherent mechanism of this strategy, rather than the result of active timing decisions.

Trump’s investment account is held in a revocable trust overseen by his eldest son, Donald Trump Jr.

Earlier this year, a 900-page document disclosed that the account completed over 21,000 transactions in 2024. Trump’s asset appreciation in 2025 exceeded $2 billion, mainly sourced from his cryptocurrency-related investments.
