How AI Agents Unlock New Use Cases for XRP

The XRP Ledger is recording growing activity from artificial intelligence agents, with more than 2.2 million agentic transactions now settled on the network.

Crypto researcher BankXRP highlighted the milestone. He reshared a post on X from the XRP Ledger Foundation discussing how AI agents could create new use cases for XRP and the XRP Ledger.

The Foundation also pointed to challenges around adoption, transaction throughput, and creating meaningful economic value.

XRP Ledger Records More Than 2.2 Million Agent Transactions

The XRP Ledger Foundation stated that agentic transactions on the network continue to build momentum, with more than 2.2 million already settled. The post referenced Chandler from t54.ai, who examined how AI agents could use XRP and the XRP Ledger as they become capable of performing financial transactions without direct human involvement at every stage.

The accompanying data shows 2,231,542 transactions, representing a 10% increase, while the chart for total XRP settled also shows a sustained rise through August 21. Although the graphic shows 142 merchants, the merchant figure declined 8% in the displayed period.

The milestone comes as developers explore whether blockchain infrastructure can support an economy in which software agents independently purchase data, computing resources, research and other digital services.

Agentic Payments Could Expand Beyond Micropayments

Chandler explained that the first million agent transactions demonstrated that autonomous software can use the XRP Ledger to exchange value. He identified the next question as what those transactions will eventually become.

According to Chandler, early agent activity is likely to focus on digital products because an AI agent can identify a resource, determine its usefulness, purchase it, and use it without leaving a software environment. Examples include proprietary datasets, model inference, computing resources, and research reports.

He also noted that these activities could create demand for frequent, low-value payments. The XRP Ledger’s low transaction costs and fast settlement could support such machine-driven transactions, although Chandler emphasized that micropayments should not be viewed as the entire agentic economy.

Adoption Could Bring More Complex Financial Activity

Chandler outlined a longer-term transition in which AI agents could receive limited authority to spend money on users’ accounts. An agent could, for example, plan a trip within a predetermined budget and require approval before making non-refundable purchases.

This model would require clearly defined spending limits, merchant restrictions, time-based permissions, and additional approval requirements. It would also require systems for transaction records, risk assessment, refunds, and disputes.

The article further explained that agents could eventually operate within broader commercial and financial systems without users directly interacting with the XRP Ledger. Some transactions could use XRP, while others could use RLUSD or connect traditional financial systems with blockchain-based settlement.

TPS May Not Be the Only Measure of Growth

Chandler also addressed the debate surrounding XRP Ledger throughput. He noted that not every action of an AI agent needs to become an individual ledger transaction. An agent could compare several providers, conduct multiple checks, and evaluate different options before recording one final economic transaction.

For this reason, he said the XRP Ledger’s future workload will depend on how agents actually operate. The focus, therefore, should extend beyond transaction counts to repeated agent activity, merchant revenue, successful purchases, and agents’ ability to operate within authorized limits.

The XRP Ledger Foundation’s post presents the 2.2 million transaction milestone as an early indicator of growing agentic activity. Chandler’s analysis suggests that the more important measure will be whether that activity develops into sustained economic use involving agents, merchants, XRP, RLUSD, and the wider XRPL ecosystem.
