VeChain VIP-255 Upgrade Sets September Mainnet Launch as VET Rallies 23%

CoinEditionCoinEdition2026/08/27 13:18

VeChain’s upcoming VIP-255 upgrade is moving toward mainnet deployment after the Interstellar governance vote cleared the protocol changes. The upgrade will introduce multiple Ethereum Improvement Proposals across VeChainThor, covering new EVM instructions, cryptographic functions, and network-level safeguards. The development comes as VET has moved higher, rising 23.53% over the past 24 hours to about $0.006967 at press time.

VET’s market capitalization climbed to approximately $599.08 million during the rally. Meanwhile, the 24-hour trading volume also jumped 277.97%, reflecting an increase in market participation.

The VIP-255 also incorporates EIP-5656, which introduces the MCOPY instruction for more efficient memory data copying. EIP-6780 changes SELFDESTRUCT behavior so contracts generally transfer balances without deleting their code. Another addition, EIP-7939, introduces a five-gas CLZ instruction that performs leading-zero calculations directly.

The upgrade also introduces cryptographic precompiles through EIP-2537, adding native BLS12-381 support. VeChain said the implementation lowers the computational cost of operations such as signature verification and bridging compared with recreating the curve through Solidity.

EIP-7951 adds native secp256r1, or P-256, verification. The same curve already supports devices, hardware keys, and passkey standards. On VeChainThor, the change allows wallets to use compatible biometric or passkey-based authorization alongside the network’s existing account abstraction and fee delegation features.

EIP-7823 and EIP-7883 also modify the MODEXP function by limiting inputs to 1,024 bytes and introducing revised gas pricing.

VIP-255 also adds three core protocol changes. EIP-2935 makes historical hashes from the latest 8,191 blocks available through an Ethereum-compatible contract interface. VeChainThor will resolve those requests through its existing Extension contract.

In addition, EIP-7825 places a 16,777,216-gas ceiling on individual transactions, while EIP-7934 limits the encoded block size to 8 MiB.

VeChain plans for the Interstellar upgrade to activate at block height 25,902,540 on Sept. 16, 2026, at approximately 11:15:10 UTC. The company described the timing as an estimate, meaning the exact activation time depends on when the network reaches that block height.
