Zakura, a prominent Zcash developer, has introduced Common, a suite of cryptography and protocol libraries designed to deliver major performance enhancements for Zcash wallets and full nodes. The new libraries promise to significantly accelerate proof generation, hashing, and verification operations, with the most pronounced speed improvements reported on mobile devices.

Major gains in mobile and desktop performance

Common brings a fourteenfold increase in proof-generation speed on mobile platforms, while desktop devices see more than a fivefold boost. Sinsemilla hashing is now over twenty-one times faster than previous solutions, and trial decryption reportedly achieves a 1.5 times improvement. Verification of zk-SNARKs has also been enhanced, delivering four- to eightfold better performance in benchmark tests.

With these advancements, the update specifically targets Zcash wallets and node operators, providing efficiency improvements for both end users and network infrastructure. Zakura emphasized that updated versions of compatible wallets, such as Vizor Wallet, along with full nodes integrating these libraries, will benefit from the new code immediately upon release.

Helius CEO Mert described the development as an impressive engineering accomplishment, highlighting the dramatic reduction in mobile latency for proof generation achieved in a single release cycle.

Reduced transaction latency and practical impact

Prior to the update, Zakura engineers stated that transaction creation on wallets could sometimes require more than three seconds. The new Common framework can reduce this waiting time to under 200 milliseconds for many users, greatly improving the transaction experience. These improvements are attributed solely to optimized library performance and do not involve changes to Zcash consensus rules or monetary policy.

Sean Bowe, co-founder of Zakura, noted that the Common update delivers measurable benefits for shielded wallets and full nodes, allowing applications to achieve enhanced responsiveness and reliability without any network rule modifications.

Adoption of the performance boost relies on wallet providers and node operators integrating Common into their respective software packages. Existing wallets and nodes are not updated automatically; manual integration is required to access the accelerated processes. The libraries remain fully open-source, facilitating broad access to the developer community.

Technical significance and industry trends

Common enables improved transaction propagation speeds and has the potential to reduce orphan blocks, benefiting the overall efficiency of Zcash infrastructure. These upgrades are considered technical enhancements, with no direct impact on Zcash network rules, shielded transactions, or protocol consensus mechanisms.

Following Zakura’s announcement of the Common release, Zcash’s native token ZEC posted a 5% gain. It was trading at approximately $833, according to available market data.

Zakura clarified that the Common upgrade is strictly a library improvement. It does not represent a network upgrade, nor does it modify protected transaction rules or monetary policy.

The enhancements affect backend processes such as proof generation, hashing, decryption, and verification, offering wallet users and node operators a pathway to higher performance should they choose to adopt the new libraries.
