- Between March and August this year, De Nederlandsche Bank transferred approximately 86 tons of gold (over a quarter of its total holdings in the US and Canada) from New York and Ottawa to London, citing concerns over escalating global geopolitical instability. London now holds nearly one-third of the Netherlands' gold reserves, becoming its largest storage location.
- The president of De Nederlandsche Bank stated that this move is intended to increase the tradability of the gold reserves and enhance crisis response capabilities—London operates the world's most liquid gold market, with internationally standardized and highly interchangeable gold bars, facilitating rapid buying, selling, and fundraising. The bank currently stores 30.8% of its total 612.4 tons of reserves at the Zeist cash center in the Netherlands.
- The transfer was completed through two means: selling gold in New York and buying the equivalent in London simultaneously, and physical transportation. In recent years, many central banks have re-evaluated their storage locations (for example, France sold US gold and replaced it with reserves in Paris, and there have been calls within Germany to repatriate overseas gold). In 2014, the Netherlands reduced its proportion of gold stored in the US. This latest transfer, due to its significant public interest, was only disclosed after preparations were finalized.
