Zuckerberg reportedly opposes the establishment of a national AI regulatory agency

According to Business Insider, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg expressed opposition last month in a phone call with U.S. President Trump regarding plans to establish a nationwide artificial intelligence regulatory agency. Sources familiar with the matter said that during the week of August 17, Trump proactively called Zuckerberg, and both sides discussed a "FINRA-style" AI regulatory institution being considered by the White House. This proposal was put forward by Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis and envisions the creation of an independent agency similar to the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority in the U.S. to review and risk-test advanced AI models. Zuckerberg believes that such an institution should reflect the Trump administration's relatively relaxed approach toward AI regulation but did not request Trump to change his stance. The White House stated that the Trump administration seeks to strike a balance between promoting AI innovation and ensuring safety. At present, this proposal remains under consideration, and the White House is also assessing another industry-led self-regulatory model. Previously, Zuckerberg commented that overly stringent regulation could slow down the release of AI models and undermine the United States' competitiveness in the AI sector.
