What does IBKR’s removal of US stock intraday trading restrictions mean for you?

In the past, for US stock margin accounts with less than $25,000, the most bothersome rule was: 5 trading days, no more than 3 intraday trades. If exceeded, it would be classified as a Pattern Day Trader (PDT), and you'd be unable to trade with less than $25,000 in your account.

Now, as FINRA's new regulations are being implemented, some IBKR accounts have already transitioned from the Pattern Day Trader (PDT)  to the new Intraday Margin Standards (Intraday Margin Standards).

The biggest change is straightforward:

They no longer count how many times you trade per day, but focus on the level of margin risk you take on during the day.

This means, even if your account only has $10,000 and you trade many times in a single day, it will not trigger PDT simply because of "too many trades".

But this doesn't mean the restrictions are gone.

The new keyword is: IMD, Intraday Margin Deficit (Intraday Margin Deficit).

Simply put, in the past regulators cared about how many trades you made; now they're more concerned if at any moment your positions are too large and your margin buffer is insufficient.

On IBKR, the most important indicator to watch is: Current Excess Liquidity

Think of it as how much buffer you currently have before you reach liquidation.

IBKR's definition of Excess Liquidity is essentially the available equity in the account minus the maintenance margin amount.

For example: Account equity is $10,000.

If you buy $30,000 worth of stocks, assuming a maintenance margin rate of 25%, you need $7,500 in margin.

So theoretically, you are left with:

$10,000 - $7,500 = $2,500

The buffer is still there. However, if your position expands further, stocks suddenly decline, or the broker temporarily increases the margin requirement for a certain stock, the intraday margin buffer may quickly disappear.

This is what the new rules are really targeting.

According to US Stock Investment Net, highly volatile stocks, leveraged ETFs, concentrated holdings, and options portfolios may have significantly higher actual margin requirements.

What you really need to pay attention to:

Current Excess Liquidity: How much buffer is left now

Look Ahead Excess Liquidity: How much is left after margin changes ahead

Margin Impact: How much margin will the next order consume

If you really create an IMD, IBKR requires you to replenish it as soon as possible. The official guidance currently is to resolve it best within 3 working days.

Additionally, if you fail to replenish multiple times within 12 months and reach the specified conditions, your account may be restricted for 90 days.

After you place this order, how much Excess Liquidity do you have left?

This is the most important change for IBKR intraday trading after PDT is abolished.
