Tesla offers Cybercab ride-hailing service in limited areas of Austin, under NHTSA evaluation

Tesla (TSLA.US) announced that it has begun offering its dual-seat Cybercab ride service within "limited areas" in Austin, Texas. This vehicle is equipped without a steering wheel or pedals. In response, the U.S. automotive safety regulator stated that it is evaluating the relevant situation. Tesla CEO Elon Musk has stated that the Cybercab will be a key product in making Tesla the dominant force in the autonomous vehicle sector. Meanwhile, the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is responsible for formulating and enforcing automotive safety regulations, including safety supervision for new models.An NHTSA spokesperson said: “NHTSA is in communication with Tesla and is evaluating the situation.” However, the spokesperson did not disclose further details.
