IBM, NASA Release Open-Source Artificial Intelligence Model for Lunar Exploration

08:58 AM EDT, 09/10/2026 (MT Newswires) -- IBM (IBM) said Thursday that it has released an open-source artificial intelligence model with NASA to support scientific exploration of the moon. The system analyzes old observation data to identify geographic features including potential ice deposits, craters, or volcanic formations, the company said. The technology outperforms existing methods by up to 23% in detecting these surface characteristics, IBM said. The researchers also published a unified dataset combining information from nine instruments used in four space missions, the company said.
