IBM Integrates Swift’s Blockchain Ledger Into Banking Infrastructure
IBM introduced two new capabilities for its Digital Asset Haven platform: connectivity to Swift’s blockchain ledger for tokenized deposit transactions and on-premises deployment of digital asset infrastructure in clients’ own data centers. Both capabilities are currently available in beta.
IBM announced an expansion of its Digital Asset Haven infrastructure. The platform added connectivity to permissioned blockchain networks, including Swift’s shared ledger. At the same time, IBM launched a beta version of Digital Asset Haven for on-premises deployment on IBM Z and IBM LinuxONE systems, with no reliance on public cloud infrastructure.
Digital Asset Haven provides institutional users with end-to-end infrastructure for managing digital assets. It supports more than 40 public and private blockchain networks and automates processes ranging from transaction routing and monitoring to settlement. The platform also helps market participants meet regulatory requirements when integrating digital and tokenized assets into their systems.
The new capabilities are aimed primarily at banks, payment providers, government entities, and other organizations subject to stringent security, data control, and regulatory compliance requirements. According to J.P. Morgan Payments, whose data IBM cited in its announcement, 93% of financial institutions are currently modernizing their payment infrastructure.
Tokenized Deposit Transactions via Swift
The integration with Swift’s infrastructure is enabled through the IBM Digital Asset Haven ISO 20022 Messaging Adapter. It allows financial institutions to send instructions for tokenized deposit transactions using the ISO 20022 standard.
Banks don’t need to completely overhaul their processes around blockchain-specific workflows. IBM’s solutions allow them to use existing payment message formats, internal procedures, and compliance controls.
Swift’s shared ledger supports, among other assets, bank-issued tokenized deposits. IBM clients participating in the program can move digital assets 24/7 ahead of final settlement through existing financial infrastructure.
The Swift initiative has already reached the following scale:
- Swift’s network connects 12,500 financial institutions across more than 200 markets.
- More than 40 financial institutions participated in the development of the blockchain ledger.
- The project moved from concept to initial deployment in 9 months.
- 17 early participants are taking part in the first tokenized deposit transaction pilots.
Swift announced its blockchain ledger in September 2025. Financial institutions participating in the program have already tested tokenized deposits using Swift’s shared ledger and IBM Digital Asset Haven.
Digital Asset Haven Can Run Entirely Within a Bank’s Infrastructure
IBM’s second new capability is an on-premises version of Digital Asset Haven. It allows banks and other organizations to manage stablecoins, tokenized deposits, and other digital assets entirely within their own computing infrastructure.
Unlike the cloud-based option, the on-premises version can be deployed in a client’s own data center on IBM Z and IBM LinuxONE systems. Organizations can use compatible IBM infrastructure they already have in place or add capacity as needed.
Key features of the on-premises version of Digital Asset Haven include:
-
Full infrastructure control. The software platform and cryptographic key management layer remain within the client’s IBM Z or LinuxONE environment. IBM says certain configurations can achieve 99.999999% system availability.
-
Hardware-backed key security. The platform uses IBM Crypto Express hardware security modules embedded in LinuxONE, while production, testing, and development environments can be isolated from one another.
-
Structured key management. The platform provides formal, auditable procedures for generating root certificate authority keys, along with documentation that can be presented to regulators.
-
Cold storage. The platform supports cold storage operations using IBM Offline Signing Orchestrator.
-
Consistent architecture. The on-premises version uses the same APIs and workflows as the cloud and hybrid versions of Digital Asset Haven. This allows clients to switch deployment models without rewriting their applications.
IBM launched Digital Asset Haven with cloud and hybrid deployment options in October 2025. According to the company, banking and payment institutions across multiple continents have since begun implementing the platform for a range of digital asset use cases.
