Tesla's Full Self-Driving Faces Call for Rejection Over Speed Functions

05:20 AM EDT, 09/29/2026 (MT Newswires) -- Tesla's (TSLA) full-self driving mode violates European Union law and United Nations regulations and should be rejected on safety grounds, the European Transport Safety Commission said Tuesday. The safety advocacy group urged the European Commission and EU member states to reject two speed-related functions of Tesla's supervised self-driving assistance at an Oct. 6 technical committee meeting. The organization said that Tesla's so-called "speed offset" function "is not merely undesirable on safety grounds but is prohibited outright by the UN regulations that governs driver assistance systems in the EU." Another function, called "contextual max speed," would allow a vehicle to set its own speed limit based on surrounding traffic, potentially allowing the vehicle to break the law, the organization said. The commission also urged the technical committee to withhold its vote on Tesla's full self-driving "until a public discussion has concluded." Tesla did not immediately reply to MT Newswires' request for comment.
