Update: Aurora Innovation Gets US Waiver for Self-Driving Truck Warning Devices
MT newswire2026/10/08 12:4008:40 AM EDT, 10/08/2026 (MT Newswires) -- (Updates with Aurora Innovation's response in the fifth and sixth paragraphs.) Aurora Innovation (AUR) has received a five-year exemption from US rules requiring drivers to place warning devices around stopped trucks, allowing its autonomous vehicles to use cab-mounted warning beacons instead, Reuters reported Wednesday. The exemption also applies to other autonomous trucking companies and allows the beacons to be used in place of reflective triangles placed outside a stopped truck, the report said. Aurora and Alphabet's (GOOG, GOOGL) Waymo jointly sought the waiver, Reuters reported. Companies using the exemption must notify the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration beforehand and report crashes involving vehicles while the beacons are activated or should have been activated, according to the report. "This decision underscores the government's recognition of the immense economic and community benefits of autonomous trucking," Gerardo Interiano, SVP of government relations and public affairs at Aurora told MT Newswires in an e-mail statement. He said the high-visibility, cab-mounted warning beacons can improve roadside safety by immediately alerting other road users "without ever needing to put a person in harm's way."
