IonQ IONQ is accelerating the strategy to build an enterprise-quality, full-stack platform through targeted mergers and acquisitions that expand its software, manufacturing and quantum-secure communications capabilities.

In January 2025, IonQ signed a definitive agreement to acquire Seed Innovations, enhancing its capabilities in machine learning, advanced software architecture and cloud migration. The transaction strengthens IonQ’s software foundation as it advances the world’s only enterprise-grade, full-stack quantum platform.

In the same month, IonQ also entered into a definitive agreement to acquire SkyWater Technology SKYT for $35.00 per share in a cash-and-stock transaction, subject to a collar, valuing it at approximately $1.8 billion. The combination will create the first vertically integrated quantum platform company, uniting IonQ’s proprietary technology with SkyWater’s onshore R&D and manufacturing capabilities. The merged entity is positioned to accelerate innovation across aerospace and defense, pharmaceuticals, finance and cloud and enterprise computing.

The above-mentioned agreements join a growing portfolio of strategic quantum acquisitions, including Skyloom, Vector Atomic, Capella Space, Oxford Ionics, ID Quantique, Lightsynq and Qubitekk.

Peer Update

Quantum Computing Inc. or “QCi” QUBT recently completed the acquisition of Luminar Semiconductor, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Luminar Technologies, Inc. in an all-cash transaction valued at $110 million. The acquisition represents a significant milestone in QCi’s strategy to build a vertically integrated, product-driven photonics and quantum technology platform. Earlier, in 2022, QCi completed its previously announced merger agreement to acquire QPhoton, Inc., a quantum photonics innovator that developed a quantum photonic system (“QPS”). This deal enabled QCi to deliver a ready-to-run, full-stack QPS designed for real-world business applications and accessible to non-quantum experts.

Rigetti Computing RGTI made no major acquisitions in 2025 but announced several notable partnerships and contracts. The company was awarded a three-year, $5.8 million contract from AFRL to advance superconducting quantum networking. Rigetti will be collaborating with QphoX on the project, a Dutch quantum technology startup developing leading frequency conversion systems for quantum applications. Also, it signed a memorandum of understanding with C-DAC, India’s premier R&D organization under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. Rigetti was also involved in the collaboration with MSU to advance quantum computing research and innovation.
