- As of the week ending September 8, fund managers increased their net long positions in US crude oil futures and options by 21,153 contracts to 140,046 contracts.
- Of these, NYMEX crude oil net longs rose by 19,720 contracts to 139,339 contracts, while ICE WTI crude oil net longs increased by 1,433 contracts to 707 contracts.
- Swap dealers' net short positions rose by 8,532 contracts to 695,925 contracts, while producers' net short positions slightly decreased by 7 contracts to 445,488 contracts.
- Other reportable accounts' net longs fell by 14,575 contracts to 75,354 contracts, while non-reportable accounts' net longs increased by 1,963 contracts to 35,037 contracts. Total open interest increased by 43,937 contracts to 3,631,742 contracts.
- In refined oil products, RBOB gasoline net longs increased by 3,662 contracts to 92,926 contracts, while heating oil net longs decreased by 4,981 contracts to 16,004 contracts.
- Speculative funds continued to add long positions at high oil prices, confronting producer hedging shorts. This indicates the market remains relatively optimistic about supply risks. However, if there are signs of easing geopolitical tensions, the high concentration of long positions could amplify pullback risks. Going forward, pay attention to developments in the Hormuz negotiations and inventory data.
