What Is the History of BRL?

The currency replaced the cruzeiro real at a rate of 1 real = 2,750 cruzeiro real. Initially, the real was pegged to the U.S. dollar, which helped stabilize its value. However, in 1999, following the Russian debt default and ensuing global financial crisis, Brazil was forced to partially float the real against the U.S. dollar.
