It is the war in Ukraine that has very clearly highlighted the decisive role of military attack drones in the armed conflicts of our time. Between conventional armies, the air force (fighter jets and bombers) remains the cornerstone of air superiority, but drones are now capable of striking a wide range of infrastructure targets with very high precision, and swarm drone attacks can threaten the largest war machines on land and at sea.
In current conflicts, drone swarms (a coordinated set of aerial, ground, and maritime drones) can cause enormous damage and take control of territories that are economically vital. They are currently a key factor in the control of the Strait of Hormuz, and only anti-drone systems and interceptor drones can provide effective protection.
Whatever the evolution of the situation in the Middle East over the coming weeks, countries around the world will continue and even intensify their momentum in equipping themselves with drones and anti-drone systems. The current conflict is yet another demonstration of the obligation for modern armies to master this technology, train their military personnel, be properly equipped, and maintain substantial stockpiles.
Therefore, from the perspective of developing strategies to hedge an equity portfolio against current and prospective geopolitical risk, maintaining a long position in a major player in the military drone market appears to be a sound choice.
The infographic below reveals the global top 5 (based on market capitalization) defense companies most involved in the design of military attack drones and anti-drone warfare systems, including drone interceptors.
Among these global leaders are notably Lockheed Martin, RTX Corporation, Kratos Defense & Security Solutions, DroneShield and Thales Group. These groups today represent a significant share of the Western defense industry in drone detection, interception, and neutralization technologies.
The American group Lockheed Martin is the world’s largest military contractor and is developing several multi-layered defense systems capable of detecting, tracking, and neutralizing drones, notably through the integration of sensors, artificial intelligence, and directed-energy weapons.
RTX Corporation, through its Raytheon heritage businesses, is also a central player with its specialized radars and air-defense systems dedicated to countering drones and drone swarms.
The American company Kratos Defense & Security Solutions stands out for its expertise in tactical military drones and so-called loyal wingman programs, in which autonomous drones accompany piloted combat aircraft.
Kratos is also developing advanced electronic warfare and simulation capabilities designed to train armed forces against new unmanned aerial threats.
On the European side, the French group Thales Group is a major player in military radars and airspace surveillance systems. Its solutions combine next-generation radars, multispectral sensors, and electronic warfare systems capable of detecting, identifying, and jamming hostile drones. These technologies are now used to protect critical infrastructure, military bases, and sensitive events.
Finally, the Australian company DroneShield specializes in counter-drone technologies. It develops radio-frequency detection systems, surveillance platforms, and jamming devices designed to neutralize or take control of unauthorized drones. DroneShield’s solutions are used both by armed forces and by security agencies or operators of critical infrastructure.
The chart below shows, for example, the daily Japanese candlesticks of Kratos Defense stock, whose underlying trend is bullish and where the 200-day moving average may provide good timing when the market price returns to its level.
